Essential Oils: a guide for basic usage + tips for the dōTERRA Family Essentials Kit.
Today I shared essential oils with one of my long time friends. We were having lunch together and upon seeing (and smelling) the diffusers in my home she asked a little bit about my experience with essential oils. I am always eager to share about oils because of how life changing they have been for us, and I always put the oils to the test by giving free samples. dōTERRA’s essential oils have been so beneficial to my family in myriad ways that I can’t help but share the wealth! This post was inspired by how fun it was to share my love of essential oils with my good friend and to see her excitement upon trying them for the first time and even purchasing her first kit! She is in for some wonderful benefits!
So if you’re a seasonsed essential oils user or a newbie I have some usage tips and ideas for you. My favorite thing about dōTERRA is their passion for education and using essential oils under the guidance of a knowledgeable Wellness Advocate who can assist you in proper usage techniques. Getting started with dōTERRA as a member means you’ve purchased an enrollment kit. Fewer things could be more exciting as you’ve got aworld of opportunity at your fingertips. There are so many uses for each kit that it would take over a dozen posts to cover them all, so here I will go over one of the most common kits, the one I started with, the Family Essentials Kit. This kit has a lot of the commonly used oils and a few blends, so keep reading even if you haven’t purchased a kit and just have a few oils at home that you’re hoping for some guidance on. The Family Essentials Kit includes 5ml bottles Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Oregano, Frankincense, plus these blends: Deep Blue®, doTERRA Breathe®, DigestZen®, and doTERRA On Guard®
You can use most of these oils 3 ways; topically, internally (in water or a gel cap), and aromatically (typically with a diffuser).
Let’s begin with lavender, lemon and peppermint also known as the beginner’s trio. These oils combined have such powerful uses, but are just as effective on their own. They are the most used combined together to battle seasonal threats (more details on how here). Lavender is often called the “swiss army knife” of essential oils because it has the most uses. It can soothe skin irritations, reducing the appearance of imperfections, it has multiple culinary uses, and is know to aid in relaxation, easing stress and clearing the mind as well as promoting peaceful sleep both with aromatic and internal use. It is so gentle that it can be safely used (diluted correctly) to sootheinfants and children. Lemon is invigorating, awakening the senses and aids in cleansing the body and air, it is also commonly used with vinegar andwater as a household cleaning agent. Peppermint is energizing, can be used for relief from digestive upsets and respiratory discomforts, it also repels bugs naturally as many insects dislike its aroma.
Melaleuca (also known as Tea Tree) essential oil is best known for use on the skin and scalp and also repels unwanted insects. It also protects agains environmental and seasonal threats, making it a great addition for a boost to the beginner’s trio mentioned above.
Oregano smells just like the herbs you may have in your garden and can be used just the same. Careful though, this oil packs a powerful punch and should be used sparingly in cooking to not overwhelm other flavors. Start with less than one drop bydipping a toothpick inside the bottle and swirling into tomato sauce. Oregano is also quite powerful in terms of building and supporting immunity, we use this in a blend of several oils applied to the bottoms of the feet when someone is sick to help them recover faster and to keep the rest of us immune.Consuming oregano offers powerful antioxidants.
As an additional note, applying oils to the bottom of the feet has a lot of benefits. One being the pores are large and can absorb the oils and their benefits quickly. Another is that your feet aren’t as sensitive as other places so youcan test for skin sensitivity. ALWAYS dilute oils when applying topically, ratios vary from oil to oil, consult a wellness advocate for specific questions (hey, that means me…shoot me an email or leave a comment for advice!)
Frankincense is the liquid gold of essential oils. It has a lot of uses. Applying it topically promotes healthy cellular function. “Frank” promotes feelings of relaxation when inhaled or applied to the bottoms of the feet. Topically it reduces the appearance of skin imperfections. I use this in my facial lotion every other day with noticable improvement in my complexion.
Deep Blue® is dōTERRA’s soothing blend. This blend of oils added to lotion makes for the most fantastic massage when you are in need of relief after along day sitt
ing or standing at your desk or have been exercising or doing heavy lifting and need some soothing and cooling comfort.
doTERRA Breathe® has a clearing, refreshing aroma and is primarily used to maintain feelings of clear airways and easy breathing. It helps minimize the effects of seasonal threats that cause breathing discomfort and promotes a restful night’s sleep. We use this mixed with unscented lotion or coconut oil as a rub on the chest and bottoms of the feet when we need some help getting a full breaths.
DigestZen® is a wonderful companion to aid in the digestion of food, soothe occasional upset stomachs, and reduce uncomfortable gas and bloating. This can be taken in an empty capsule, in a glass or mouthful of water, or applied topically to the stomach area for all the benefits.
doTERRA On Guard® is one of doTERRA’s most popular oils. It is a powerful proprietary
blend that supports healthy immune function and contains cleansing properties. We use this blend the most out of any other. We use On Guard for cleaning every surface in our home because it protects agains environmental threats, it is also able to do this through diffusing and has an uplifting and energizing aroma. When taken internally or applied topically it supports the body’s natural antioxidant defenses as well as healthy immune function. We go through a lot of this come fall and winter, I love to drink my coffee with a drop of On Guard every morning for it’s comforting flavor and to take in all these benefits!
Beadlets! The Family Essentials Kit currently comes with peppermint and On Guard beadlets. These little travel friendly capsules contain one drop of oil for easy use on the go. Just pop one in your mouth anywhere for the benefits of peppermint of the On Guard blend. Both freshen breath so I use them in place of mints or gum.
There is an essential oil for just about every thing you can list, fromcommon to severe physical discomforts, to cooking, cleaning and mood enhancement. There are oils for mechanics, there are oils for crafters, there are oils for athletes and there are oils for teachers and students. In my opinion, essential oils are for everyone. I’ve teased that I’ve turned into a hippie with making all my own products, including Kombucha, but I still shower and I don’t smoke anything so I don’t think they’d really let me join the official club. For me natural ways of dealing with natural issues just seems…natural! Essential oils may seem trendy, but they actually have their roots in ancient history making them time tested. There is also a lot of science to back up their use and benefits. I would be happy to steer you toward any of those resources, just ask!
